In the afternoon we set out on a boat cruise on the Chobe River. Chobe boat cruises are a wonderful way to experience the Chobe National Park. Large herds of elephants are common in the park as they make their way to the river for a drink and onto the islands in the river to feast off the sweet grass. Puku and lechwe antelopes are common on the Chobe floodplains. Herds of elephants cross the Chobe River to the island which is a site to behold. You will be staying in a lodge for 1 night on bed & breakfast basis. Lunch & dinner at (own expense) Lodge Accommodation [Lunch x 1, Dinner x1]
Day 2 & 3: NXAI PAN - FULLY SERVICED CAMPING
Depart to Nxai Pan after the Rising sun and after having after amazing breakfast prepared by our dedicated chef and a quick shower prepared by our devoted camp assistant. The route takes you 500 kilometres south to Nxai Pan National Park where sweet grasses host a variety of wildlife. You will have a quick stop en-route for a picnic lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive in the park before getting to your campsite. Camping will be at a private designated campsite with bush ablutions.
Nxai Pan itself is an extensive grass plain, part, once again, of the old lake bed, which is more generously covered with acacia trees. In the south of Nxai Pan, Baines' Baobabs comprise a clump of large baobab trees, rendered immortal in 1862 by painter Thomas Baines, a member of Livingstone's expedition. The Nxai Pan National Park is basically a salt pan. After a good rainfall water flows into the pan and on the grass country. The numbers can be staggering; wildebeest, zebra and gemsbok appear in their thousands, along with large herds of other Antelope and Giraffe. Here, and within the mopane woodland, lion, giraffe, kudu, impala, ostrich, fascinating birdlife and large numbers of springbok, together with a good population of jackal, bat-eared fox and numerous smaller creatures, are permanent residents. Once the rains have started, gemsbok, elephant and zebra migrate to the area. We will camp in this area for 2 nights with amazing game drives exploring the remarkable salt pan’s landscape and he wild animals. Tented camping accommodation [Breakfast x2, Lunch x 2, Dinner x2]
Day 4: MAUN - Lodging
In the morning wake up early for a beautiful sunrise, come back for breakfast and we put down the camp before we depart to Maun. We will arrive in Maun in the afternoon and accommodation is in a lodge for 1 night on bed and breakfast basis. Lunch & dinner own expense. Those who feel like going to town may go to buy their necessities for the Okavango Panhandle which will be the following day, while those remaining behind may rest by the pool side. Day 5 & 6: OKAVANGO PANHANDLE - Fully serviced camping
We depart to Okavango Delta after breakfast. Once you have reached the edge of the Delta, you will meet your polers, who will be acting as your tour guides from the local community with their mokoro (traditional dugout canoe). Quietly cruising along reed lined channels and floodplains, you will enjoy the spectacular landscape of this unique region during the calm transfer taking you deeper inside the Delta. You will spend two days exploring this beautiful area with mokoro excursions and guided nature walks on the islands and floodplains of the Okavango, camping wild with bush ablutions on a small island for two nights.
The delta also hosts over 400 bird species. This is where Africa Dwarf Frog Safaris derived the tour designation from because of the massive and interesting bird species including the fish eagle. Photographers will be able to capture among others; helmeted guineafowl, African fish eagle, Pel's fishing owl, Egyptian goose, South African shelduck, African jacana, African skimmer, marabou stork, crested crane, African spoonbill, African darter, southern ground hornbill, wattled crane, lilac-breasted roller, secretary bird, and common ostrich. Sometimes we can experience them passing through our camp or maybe some predators chasing after their kill.
The Khwai Concession is a large area dominated by Mopane forests on the north eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. For another safari experience you will drive in the northeast tip of Moremi for another camping site at Khwai. As a privately managed concession Khwai gives you access to unrestricted game viewing, night drives that will give you a glimpse into the marvels of wildlife at might. Chobe National Park is one of Africa’s finest game sanctuaries.
